HIV virus contains viral proteins.  Every cell in our body has DNA and RNA. DNA is double stranded, and RNA is single stranded.  DNA is the one which really translates all the information and basically responsible for everything that happens in our body.HIV virus is an RNA virus. It is a single stranded virus.RNA by itself cannot do anything. So, this virus grows inside our body and affects specific cells in our body which is called CD4 cells, immune cells and forces their DNA to work for the virus Usually DNA makes RNA, but in this case the virus RNA goes and takes over DNA and then makes its own RNA copies. That is why we called it a retrovirus.
